Osteoporosis is a problem that people have as they age, especially women. It's when the bones start to become more brittle and lose their density. It's generally because there is less calcium going into the bones and what calcium is there is getting leached out of the bones, which is what makes them weaker. People with osteoporosis can have problems with microfractures forming in their bones because the bones are just not as strong as they used to be and it doesn't take a lot for the bones to break. There are things that you can do that will help fight off osteoporosis or even reverse some of the effects of it.

Exercise

One easy thing you can do is exercise. Any kind of exercise is good because it will help you build up new bone and keep the bone that you already have. The best things you can do are weight-bearing exercises. Those are exercises where you are fighting against the pull of gravity. That's what going to strengthen your bones the most. That will include things like walking or jogging, or even lifting weights. You don't have to lift heavy weights in order to get the benefits. If you are limited as to how much you can move, there are still things that you can do. The important thing is that you are moving around and getting some kind of exercise.

Ditch the Soda

As much as you might not want to, you should ditch the soda habit, or at least cut down on how much you drink. There are a couple of reasons for that. One is that most sodas, especially colas, contain phosphorus. While phosphorus is something that your body does need to have, you need to balance it with calcium intake. That's because too much phosphorus coupled with not enough calcium will start to cause your bones to thin out, so any problems you may already have with thinning bones can get worse. It's important to note that you may already have problems with thinning bones before you know you do, so limiting your soda intake is always going to be good. Caffeine can also slow down or mess up the way that your body absorbs calcium, so a caffeinated soda can be a huge double whammy.

If you are worried about osteoporosis, or your doctor has already told you that you have microfractures from osteoporosis, it's important that you do what you can to fight it and maybe reverse some of the effects. Your doctor might also recommend osteoporotic fracture treatments if your breaks are severe enough.
